FLINDERS OVERSEAS HEALTH GROUP Obstetric Project Report Summary – June 12th 2023
The teaching was held in the new Dr Peter Scott Education Building. Five Doctors and six Midwives conducted the teaching, along with volunteers who helped with the set up and the organising of the station for estimated blood loss.
Due to the fact that this teaching was only conducted for one day and with the number of participants, no pre or post test was included to save time for the intensive teaching. Approximately 50 students participated in the teaching.
The morning was used to teach the theory of the following advanced life support in obstetrics:
- Basic Life Support
- Neonatal Resus
- Post Partum Hemorrhage
- Shoulder Dystocia Breech Birth Estimated Blood Loss Ultrasound
The afternoon was spent running stations for each emergency. These stations were run by groups of two health professionals at each station. Two volunteers set up the station for estimated blood loss outside the new building and directed each group through the station.
The staff at the hospital organised five pregnant women to attend the teaching and these women were able to help with the teaching of basic ultrasound by two of our Consultant Obstetricians.
The teaching went really well with positive feedback given by each group of midwives and doctors that attended. Each and every one of the health professionals teaching agreed that it was an incredible day , all of whom have stated that they would absolutely join me on future teaching trips.
